Israelíes desarrollan ‘bomba de racimo’ para el cáncer

 Investigadores médicos israelíes dicen que han desarrollado una nueva técnica para acribillar tumores de cáncer de adentro hacia afuera, lo que reduce el riesgo de reincidencia de la enfermedad después del tratamiento.

 Los profesores Yona Keisari e Itzhak Kelson, de la Universidad de Tel Aviv, están a punto de comenzar los ensayos clínicos de un implante radioactivo, del tamaño de un alfiler, que emite radiación alfa de corto alcance desde dentro del tumor.

 Una declaración de la universidad citó a Keisari diciendo que, a diferencia de la radioterapia convencional, que bombardea al cuerpo con rayos gamma desde afuera, las partículas alfa "se difunden dentro del tumor, extendiéndose más y más antes de desintegrarse".

"Es como una bomba de racimo - en lugar de detonar en un solo punto, los átomos se dispersan continuamente y emiten partículas alfa a distancias cada vez mayores".

La universidad dijo que el proceso tarda alrededor de 10 días y deja, tras de sí, sólo cantidades de plomo no radiactivo ni tóxico.

 "No sólo son destruidas, más confiablemente, las células cancerosas, sino que, en la mayoría de los casos, el cuerpo desarrolla inmunidad contra la reincidencia del tumor", dijo el comunicado.

 El implante de alambre, que se inserta en el tumor con una aguja hipodérmica, “se desintegra sin causar daños en el cuerpo", agregó.

 Continuó diciendo que, en los ensayos pre-clínicos en ratones, a un grupo se le extirparon quirúrgicamente los tumores, mientras que el otro fue tratado con el alambre radiactivo.

 "Cuando se reinyectaron células del tumor en los sujetos, el 100% de los tratados quirúrgicamente volvieron a desarrollar su tumor, en comparación con sólo el 50% de los tratados con el alambre radiactivo", dijo.

 "Los investigadores han tenido excelentes resultados con muchos tipos de modelos de cáncer, incluyendo cáncer de pulmón, páncreas, colon, mama y tumores cerebrales".

Agregó que el procedimiento iniciaría ensayos clínicos en el Hospital Beilinson, cerca de Tel Aviv, "muy pronto".

Israeli medical researchers say they have developed a new technique for blasting cancer tumors from the inside out which reduces the risk of the disease returning after treatment. Unlike conventional radiation therapy, which bombards the body with gamma rays from outside, the alpha particles "diffuse inside the tumor, spreading further and further before disintegrating," a university statement quoted Keisari as saying. "It's like a cluster bomb – instead of detonating at one point, the atoms continuously disperse and emit alpha particles at increasing distances." The university said that the process takes about 10 days and leaves behind only non-radioactive and non-toxic amounts of lead. "Not only are cancerous cells more reliably destroyed, but in the majority of cases the body develops immunity against the return of the tumor," the statement said. The wire implant, inserted into the tumor by hypodermic needle, "decays harmlessly in the body," it added. It went on to say that in pre-clinical trials on mice, one group had tumors removed surgically while another was treated with the radioactive wire. "When cells from the tumor were reinjected into the subject, 100% of those treated surgically redeveloped their tumor, compared to only 50% of those treated with the radioactive wire," it said.

"The researchers have had excellent results with many types of cancer models, including lung, pancreatic, colon, breast, and brain tumors."

It added that the procedure would begin clinical trials at Beilinson hospital, near Tel Aviv, "soon."
